Sebastian Tatar

I'm a first-year mechanical engineering student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, pursuing a minor in Business through Gies College. I care about how things get made — the CAD work, the tolerances, the BOM, and the economics of actually shipping a product.

Outside the classroom, I run D.T. Mobile Detailing, a mobile car detailing service I built from scratch. I played competitive soccer in the FC United MLS Next Academy and now play for the UIUC Men's Club team. I'm fluent in English, Polish, and Spanish.

I'm drawn to work that combines engineering rigor with entrepreneurial thinking — products, not just prototypes.

Things I've built

CAD Prototyping DFM

FlexFold Lap Desk

A foldable, portable work surface designed from scratch in Fusion 360. Full parametric model, functional prototype, BOM, and unit cost analysis.

Oct – Dec 2025

Problem

Students need a stable, portable work surface that fits in a backpack without adding bulk.

Approach

Started with rough sketches and convergent-divergent ideation, then moved into Fusion 360 for parametric modeling. Prioritized a folding mechanism that required no hardware — just clever geometry.

What I did

  • Full CAD model in Fusion 360 with parametric dimensions
  • Built a functional prototype and iterated on the hinge geometry
  • Prepared a complete bill of materials with sourced vendors
  • Ran a unit cost analysis targeting a student-friendly price point

What I'd do differently

Prototype earlier. I spent too long refining the CAD before testing the fold geometry in cardboard. Physical feedback would have saved a week.

Entrepreneurship Operations

D.T. Mobile Detailing

Mobile car detailing business I built from scratch — I come to the customer. Handles everything from customer acquisition to service delivery.

2024 – Present

Problem

Traditional car washes require customers to drive out, wait in line, and settle for generic service. There's a market for premium detail work done on-site.

Approach

Built D.T. Mobile Detailing around three ideas: go to the customer, deliver a higher-quality detail than the drive-through, and price transparently.

What I've done

  • Built a pricing structure across three service tiers
  • Acquired customers through social media and referrals
  • Handle scheduling, route planning, and service delivery myself
  • Reinvested early revenue into better equipment and supplies

What I've learned

Running a service business is 50% the work, 50% the system around the work. Scheduling, communication, and consistency matter as much as the detail itself.

Outside the lab

Competitive Soccer

Played striker in the FC United MLS Next Academy. Now suiting up for the UIUC Men's Club team — soccer taught me how to work under pressure, lose well, and put in unglamorous reps.

🌍

Three Languages

Grew up speaking Polish at home and picked up Spanish through school and travel. Moving between languages has shaped how I approach problems — there's usually more than one way to frame anything.

🏔️

Always Moving

Structured training routines, time with fraternity brothers, and planning trips. Iceland is next on the list. Staying physically active keeps me sharp everywhere else.
